Tony Heynen (Global Riddims) is a life long music enthusiast, DJ, radio host and highly regarded music journalist based in Brussels, Belgium.
Tony has kindly put together an exclusive mixtape of the distinct international sounds he plays each week on his outstanding Global Riddims show on Groovalizacion Radio. Vibes.
Hi Tony. Thank so much for the amazing selection! How are things with you?
Hi Sam, I’m doing fine thanks. Summer was extremely busy and I’m glad that things are slowly going back to normal. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to supply some music for Tropical North Podcast and for letting me do my thing by bringing a diverse selection of music.
Some radio shows or promoters often contact me for a mix/DJ-set and tell me in advance what I can and can’t play! That’s something for people who take music way too seriously! Not my cup of tea at all, I like diversity in every aspect so it was a pleasure making the mixtape.
When I’m abroad, I jump into record shops to see if they have some rare records that are not digitally released. The last record I bought was a Jimi Tenor 7 inch in Sounds of the Universe in London.
There’s so much good music out there right now, especially for DJ’s such as yourself who look far and wide for inspiration. That said, which new artists do we have to look out for in 2019, and who was your last musical discovery to make you sit up and say ‘wow!’.
Three artists/bands from Belgium that I would certainly recommend are Daniel Dzidzonu, Kolonel Djafaar & Azmari.
Daniel Dzidzonu was born in Togo into the sounds of Afrobeat & Highlife, his new album ‘Walls of Wonder’ will be released on September 22nd and is one of the better albums of the year.
